Feeling Comfortable on Camera
Last month, I had the privilege of photographing Courtney & Dan’s engagement session, and it was such a joy to be part of their love story! We explored some of the most iconic spots in Chicago, starting at the Wrigley Building & making our way through the city to Clark & Lasalle Street, and finally to Merchandise Mart. While the city’s energy & beautiful backdrops made for the perfect setting, it was Courtney & Dan's connection that truly made this session special.
When we first started, they shared with me that they weren’t exactly comfortable in front of the camera. That’s a totally normal feeling – in fact, it’s something I hear from almost every couple I work with! So, instead of focusing on stiff poses or awkward smiles, I encouraged them to just have fun & enjoy the experience. I promised them that as long as they stayed relaxed & focused on each other, everything would feel natural.
And guess what? It worked! We played around with some classic poses – the twirl (because who doesn’t love a good spin!), the airplane arms (to add a little playful fun), the D-Day kiss (one of those sweet, movie-moment kisses), & just staring lovingly into each other’s eyes (because sometimes, the best shot is just about pure connection).
The magic happened
when they enjoyed being
in the moment together.
It was clear from the start how much they adore each other – their joy & love for one another radiated throughout the session.
So, here’s my top tip for couples who might feel a bit nervous about being in front of the camera:
Just have fun with it!
Trust your photographer, focus on each other, & let the natural moments unfold. The more relaxed & comfortable you are, the more beautiful & authentic the photos will be.
Courtney & Dan – I’m beyond excited for your wedding next year, & I can’t wait to capture more beautiful moments as you continue to grow together!
