Some wedding venues are beautiful. Others have more than 600 years of history, 2,500 acres of private parkland, rooms filled with incredible artwork, and the kind of architecture that makes you want to photograph absolutely everything.
Knowsley Hall, just outside Liverpool, England, happens to be the latter.
But before we get into the estate (and trust me, there's plenty to talk about), there's a little backstory to this wedding.
Sarah and I went to high school together. Fast forward a few years, and she was asking me to travel across the Atlantic to photograph her wedding to Peter. One of my favorite things about being a photographer is how unexpectedly people can reenter your life, and suddenly you're there documenting a completely new chapter of theirs.
And this particular chapter took place in an English country estate. Not a bad assignment.
A Wedding at Knowsley Hall, Just Outside Liverpool
There's something about historic English estates that feels almost cinematic, and Knowsley Hall is no exception.
Located in Merseyside, just outside Liverpool, Knowsley Hall has been home to the Earls of Derby for centuries. The estate is filled with elaborate interiors, original artwork, sweeping architectural details, and gardens that stretch across the property.
It's the kind of place where you walk into a room, immediately start thinking about how you'd photograph it, and then walk into the next room and completely rethink your plan.
And because Sarah & Peter had exclusive use of the estate for their wedding, we had the opportunity to explore the property without navigating around other events or visitors.
For a photographer, that's about as good as it gets.
What makes Knowsley Hall particularly interesting to photograph is the variety. One moment you're surrounded by ornate interiors and centuries-old artwork, and the next you're outside with expansive lawns, gardens, and the historic estate as your backdrop.
There's so much visual character already built into the property that the setting becomes part of the story without needing to compete with the people in it.
Wedding Portraits Around the Knowsley Estate
One of the things I loved most about photographing Sarah & Peter's wedding was having the freedom to use so many different parts of the estate for portraits.
Historic venues can sometimes feel overwhelming in photographs. Between the elaborate architecture, ornate interiors, and dramatic scale of the rooms, there's a lot happening visually.
But that's also what makes them interesting.
I love creating portraits that feel connected to their surroundings, especially when the location has this much character. The architecture adds depth, the artwork adds texture, and the grounds provide an entirely different setting without ever leaving the property.
With Sarah & Peter, we had the opportunity to incorporate those elements into their wedding portraits while keeping the focus exactly where it belonged: on the two of them.
And yes, having an entire historic English estate as your backdrop certainly doesn't hurt.
An Intimate Jewish Wedding in England
For all the grandeur of Knowsley Hall, Sarah & Peter's wedding was an intimate celebration. And I think that contrast is part of what made the day so memorable.
The wedding included a traditional Jewish ketubah signing, followed by their ceremony and celebration with family & friends. There was an orchestra, heartfelt speeches, and so many thoughtful elements throughout the day.
I always find Jewish weddings particularly interesting to photograph because there's so much meaning in the traditions themselves. The ketubah signing, for example, creates an entirely different kind of photographic moment from the ceremony or reception. It's an opportunity to document the people, relationships, and traditions that are part of the celebration.
And while the larger moments naturally draw attention, I'm just as interested in everything happening around them.
A glance across the room. Someone's reaction during a speech. The little interactions that might go unnoticed in the moment but become some of my favorite photographs afterward.
Those are the details that give a wedding gallery its personality.
The Speeches, the Celebration & Everything in Between
There's a particular energy to a wedding where everyone in the room feels connected to the couple.
Sarah & Peter's celebration was smaller in scale, but there was nothing small about the thought that went into it.
From the orchestra that played them in to the personal speeches and the celebration that followed, the day was filled with moments that reflected who they are as a couple.
The speeches were a highlight, not just for what was said, but for the reactions around the room. Those are some of my favorite moments to document because they happen naturally, without direction or posing.
It's also why I think wedding photography should be about more than a collection of beautiful portraits.
Of course, I love a gorgeous venue and a perfectly composed photograph. But the photographs that tend to stay with people are often the ones that bring them right back to how a moment felt.
And sometimes that's a beautiful portrait in front of a historic estate. Other times, it's an expression during a speech that lasts all of two seconds.
Both deserve to be photographed.
A Knowsley Hall Wedding to Remember
Looking back at Sarah & Peter's wedding, what stands out is the combination of such an extraordinary setting and such a personal celebration.
The history of Knowsley Hall, the architecture, the artwork, the grounds, and the opportunity to photograph an intimate Jewish wedding within it all made for an incredible experience.
But there's also something worth saying about the personal side of being a wedding photographer.
When Sarah first reached out, we were two people who had known each other in high school. Years later, I was standing in an English estate photographing her wedding.
It's funny where life takes you, and even more interesting where photography takes you.
Sarah & Peter, thank you for inviting me to document your wedding. England, incredible architecture, and a beautiful celebration. I'd happily do it all over again.
